Project summary
Project title: Addressing violence, exploitation and abuse of children and young people at risk in rural Rwanda
Implementation period: June 2014 to December 2016
This project aims to break the cycle of poverty, isolation, violence, exploitation and abuse of children and young people at risk in Rural Rwanda. It is done through creating an improved environment in which households headed by children and young people can exercise their rights and become influential in driving social change.
Children who have to fend for themselves or look after younger siblings without the support of relatives is a growing problem in Rwanda. The genocide in the 1990s decimated families and communities and a continuing legacy is the high prevalence of such vulnerable child-headed households, last estimated to number 300,000. The project will seek to address a wide range of needs by ensuring access to basic services such as education, health insurance, counseling and legal assistance especially to combat sexual violence; as well as the provision of training and income generation to help them out of poverty.
The result will be child-headed households who are better supported by communities. A total of 2000 CYPHH benefited from the project
