  • Posted on:  Tuesday, 07 May 2019 07:51

Building the capacities of rural farmers in achieving inclusive and Sustainable livelihoods through resilient ecosystems, productive employment and entrepreneurship

The strategic plan wants to enhance the role of rural farmers in the shift from subsistence to professional agriculture as an opportunity for rural employment and entrepreneurship, linking farmers associations to agro processors and other private sector actors.

This will be achieved through five strategic directions:

  1. Addressing the issue of food security through resilient ecosystems, Inclusive Employment and Improved Farmers’ Skills.
  2. Addressing the issue of gender equality and Women’s access to land-based economic opportunities and how gender justice is embedded in the current agricultural and land reforms. The program will increase the awareness of the stakeholders in women’s rights and gender policies and ensure the integration of gender equality in value chains through access to economic opportunities.
  3. Addressing the need to integrate health and nutrition in development work, given the critical issue of land and population density. There is a correlation between land access- size of family and Poor Food consumption. The program will ensure that health rights are integrated in value chains production through universal access to services and reproductive health (family planning)
  4. Addressing the issue of Conflicts over land and resources and the incidence of agricultural and land reforms. The program will engage rural farmers in understanding the stakes for SSF in the policy reforms, and the potential conflicts related to land governance, engage SSFA in value chains production to access food and income and come together as a social movement for influence and change, hence prevent the social exclusion based on resources and live together peacefully.
  5. Addressing the institutional development and the capabilities of the program in learning and accountability, advocacy on emerging issues and secure quality funding. The program will improve the management systems and increase the capacities of the team in learning, accountability, efficient communication and quality funding, with a focus on the pro active resource mobilisation and possibilities to generate income for the program.
